How to paint a Yellow Rose in Watercolor by Artist Huang Youwei. Many people often focus on the external appearance of an object when they are painting. In fact, when painting, more attention should be paid to the internal structure of the object. Look at this flower, we think it looks like a structure of a cabbage plant.

1. Make a Line Drawing

Because I’m afraid the sketching is dirty, I don’t draw branches and leaves. So, I lightly wiped the pencil strokes with a very soft eraser before coloring and leaving faint pencil strokes.

2. Start painting your watercolor flower painting

Choose one of the brightest petals in the center to start painting. Notice the reflection of the petals and white space on the sunny side. This whiteness is very important and must be kept.

Paint two darker petals in the center of the flower. Leaves a thin white line between the two petals at the top of the petal

The petals in the center are very close together, and the colors of the two outermost petals become very dark together. Increase the tone using Violet, Ultramarine Blue, and Rose madder adding medium yellows, Orange yellows, and Lemon yellows. Add a touch of Green. The upper part of the left petal is slightly cooler and the lower part of the right petal is warmer.

There are many different ways to paint watercolor flower painting. This method is easy to control and very effective, simple, and easy to learn. It can be called the partial wet painting method ur called rolling technique. You don’t have to rush when painting, you can stop anywhere, and the most important thing is the alignment between the colors.

3. Start painting the branches and leaves

Next, use a pencil to outline the branches and leaves, as well as the two small flowers are hidden behind. Small spikes on the branches should also be carefully added.

In this step, paint the first layer of color on the branches and leaves. The colors of the leaves are Phthalo green (yellow shade), Dark blue, Green, light purple, yellow ocher, yellow, and a touch of Red. Leave a thin white line to suggest the midrib of the leaf, the small thorns on the branches do not need to be painted at this time.

4. Paint the background of Yellow Rose

I like dark backgrounds, this is a purely personal preference. When I paint the background, I pay attention to the change in the value of the background and look for a variety of cold and warm colors in the darker background. In general, I also like to paint with different shades of dark gray. Mainly use dark blue, dark purple, Payne’s grey, dark green, dark red, light purple, green, permanent rose, and a touch of Yellow ocher.

By using the same colors as above, paint gaps between the branches and leaves, and take care to leave small thorns on the branches.

5. Finishing up the final details of Your Yellow Rose Painting

Remove the pencil strokes on the flower, be sure to let the paper dry completely before doing that.

Add details to the flower buds in the back. Of course, the way and colors used are similar to painting the flower above.

Finalize the final details of each leaf. A leaf, no matter how small, needs to be carefully drawn in terms of shape, light, shade, and three-dimensional structure. This is a relatively happy job and you can listen to music as a way to relax and paint.
