History of Marker Pen
In the 19th century, “Feel Pens” were made by compressing the fur of animals such as sheep or camels into a sheet. The felt was then cut out and put into a conical metal tube, which was impregnated with ink and operated by capillary action. By the 20th century, synthetic fibers and synthetic resins began to be used to replace felt, and they were called markers.
Types of marker pens for artists
Alcohol-based and water-based
There are two most common types of markers on the market, alcohol-based and water-based.
- Alcohol-based markers use alcohol as a solvent, which features quick drying, colorfastness, and water resistance. However, it is recommended to use them in a well-ventilated area because they have a strong odor.
- Water-based markers: water is used as the main solvent. They take a long time to dry, are less lasting and color fades if exposed to water.
The shape of the Markers tip
The marker has both a thick tip and a thin tip. However, the thick tip is often used to quickly cover large areas, and the thin tip is used to apply fine details. In short, you can get lines of different thicknesses by changing the angle of the pen tip.
