Portrait Of Old Man in Watercolor

Watercolor is a difficult material to use, especially for painting portraits with watercolors much more difficult. Because in addition to you have to controlling the flow of color, we also have to understand the structure of the head such as its bones, muscles, and proportions.

I drew this old man portrait a few years ago, around mid-2018, I don’t remember very well. Luckily I took a picture of the painting process and saved it on my MacBook.

Note, this is not a tutorial on how to paint watercolor portraits, it’s just for fun.

Of course, I didn’t record the painting process and upload it to my youtube channel.

Techniques And Material

For this reason, I just want to share with you the process of painting a portrait with watercolor. It’s a pity that I don’t remember what pigments I used because it’s been so long. So, I hope it helps some, not all.

Moreover, I used wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry techniques for this watercolor portrait, don’t use white at all.

I just wet the part I want to paint with clean water and paint it.

Then wait for it to dry and continue with the next layer like the previous step until the color is deep enough, because watercolor paint always looks brighter after it dries.

In the process of coloring, you must pay attention to the anatomy and structure of the face, because it is the backbone of a portrait painting.

Finally, I have used watercolor paper Hahnemuhle 300GSM Rough watercolor paper, this is a German brand. It’s quite new to me, and this is my first experience with it. And so, I drew this painting.
