Step 01: How To Paint Autumn Trees in Watercolor
First, apply the background color of the first tree with golden yellow, and leave some space intentionally or unintentionally.
Step 02
Then use Olive green to paint the second layer. This step not only gives the tree spatial depth but also the relationship between light and shade (light side – dark side).

We continue to paint the second tree on the left. Similar to paint the first tree. You see, after creating a base with one or two colors, I started adding depth to the foliage using my favorite stippling technique.
Step 04
In this step, we go back to the first tree, I used dark yellow to paint the leaves. Because this tree is the main focus of the painting; so, i painted it in the most detailed and meticulous way.
Step 05: To paint the Autumn Tree
In the deeper depiction, the color and light-dark relationship will show more layers, and the outer contour of the canopy needs to be trimmed.

Now, we can distinguish the canopy of trees with different near-far distances and clear main-sub relationships; as a result, the painting has depth. They are side by side, branches and leaves are intertwined, and the big tree on the right has the most obvious details.
Step 07
Start painting the trunk with a dark gray color, small branches intertwine with the foliage. Moreover, the big tree on the left has the biggest and darkest trunk, the others are smaller and lighter.
Step 08: Paint the ground of the painting
The deciduous ground looks like a carpet with a messy pattern.

At this stage of the painting, look at the overall effect. As you can see, the woods in the distance are a combination of dots and patches of color. There the color is also reduced in saturation, which makes the leaves in the foreground stand out in pure color.

The technique of stippling often appears in my works. It can be used to express the smoothness of trees, flowers, the rough texture of rocks and the sense of time of speckled walls. But when we use “point”, we need to combine “line” and “surface”. For example, this work of the forest uses points as the main mode of expression, while the branches are the element of the line and the forest in the distance is used as the expression of the “texture of surface”. In conclusion, a painting with rhythm and harmony can only be created when the “points”, “line” and “texture of surface” appear to alternate harmoniously and logically in the work.
