How to paint watercolor street scenes by Fei Xiqiang

Step 1: Sketch

Sketch simple lines in blue, I like to use light blue to draw straight lines, and to outline and position key shapes. Such as the position of the skyline, the contour of the building, and the approximate shape of the car, the lamp post.

Step 1: Sketch

Step 2: Color the large surface

I used a brush to paint the light color of the previous picture. I started with the reflection on the ground for this piece. Notice the warm color of the reflection of the car’s taillights and the cold color of the snow on the pavement.

Step 3: Draw a reflection on the ground while the paper is still wet.

In the case of wet ground, describe the reflection of the car’s taillights, the reflections of buildings and trees, and the shadow of the bottom of the vehicle. Note that the color of the large surface must have changed to cool, warm shades. Rinse the lanes of the road with clean water when it is just dry, and splash the water to increase the texture of the pavement.

Step 4: Add the sky and buildings

Paint the sky and buildings. Through the dark color of the large surface of the building, the snow and the brightness of the lights are contrasted. The brightest part of the street light needs to be left empty, you can use water to clean the halo part of the lamp. This means, washing it with water, and after a while using a dry paper towel to wipe it. Attention should be paid to the precision of whitespace. I like to use ripe browns and darks to get darker shades or grays, and the different proportions can easily change the cool and warm colors.

Step 5: Determine the center of the painting.

Light lines such as lampposts and tree branches near the center of the picture are the focus of this stage. Tree branches and streetlights in dark buildings need to be shaved off with a razor before the base color dries. The light color of the skylight pole washes off with water, be careful not to be too bright, the faint effect is the best.

Step 6: Improve the overall relationship of the painting.

This step adds elements of the road and points, such as dark poles, lights in the distance, trees in the lower right corner, and pedestrians holding umbrellas. The bright wires are scraped off after the paper dries. To achieve the richness of the dark parts, the dark parts of the building on the left were repainted and wetted with water. The integrity of the painting and the balance of points, lines, and surface textures are key.
